I strongly oppose the proposal to establish the largest asbestos landfill in an urban area, right on our doorstep.
Please sign this petition to protect our community.
The Largest Asbestos Depot in WA
If approved, this site would become the largest asbestos landfill in Western Australia, alarmingly close to homes, schools, and aged care centres—just 40 metres from St. Andrews School and 70 metres from Hellenic Aged Care. The proposed facility plans to store 200,000 tonnes of hazardous waste each year.
Protecting Our Groundwater for Future Generations
The site is already classified as “Contaminated - Restricted Use” by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER). Allowing this operation to proceed could further contaminate our groundwater, a vital source of drinking water for our children and future generations.
Potential Noise and Dust Hazards
The applicant has acknowledged that noise and dust, including deadly asbestos particles, could be discharged during operations. Exposure to asbestos dust can cause serious health issues, including cancer.
Rejected by Local Councils and the Community
Both the City of Stirling and the City of Bayswater have rejected this proposal, recognising the significant risks it poses to our community. Community consultation showed overwhelming opposition, with 98.56% of submissions objecting to the proposal. Only one submission was received in support.
Designated Parks and Recreation Reserve
According to the Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS) Zoning, this site is designated as a “Parks and Recreation Reserve,” making it completely inappropriate for an asbestos landfill.
As your Liberal candidate for Morley, I am committed to fighting for a healthy and safe community. But I need your help.
